The Shins

The Shins haven't released an album in almost 5 years, so when I heard they were coming out with new music, I couldn't wait to listen. They've kept fans happy with side projects like Broken Bells (frontman James Mercer's collaboration with Danger Mouse), but I'm happy to see them back and making music together again. This track is called "Simple Song" and just try not to smile after giving it a listen. I know I wasn't the only one who missed them and Caring about this may be Creepy (Shins play on words!), but I can't wait to hear the rest of their new album. Port of Morrow is out March 20. J. Cole's debut album Cole World-The Sideline Story was finally released! Unfortunately or fortunately..depending on how you look at it, I had heard a lot of the tracks from the album already, but I was really happy with the album when I purchased it. I really like that he only did 4 collaborations. Sometimes I get annoyed when artists fill their albums with other people. I bought it to hear you, not them, ya know? Another thing I reeeaaaaalllyyy like about J. Cole is that he talks about women in the context of relationships and desires (..and abortions..it happens?), but not by constantly calling them hoes. Don't get me wrong, I'm no feminist (I enjoy the song "Some Cut" too much), but it's nice to get those respectful vibes from a rapper. His old fans seem to think Cole World is just OK and new fans are really enjoying it. I think the album is definitely worth the purchase. Every once in a while you hear a song that really catches your attention. When I recently heard Lana Del Rey's "Video Games", that's what happened. I don't know if it's her retro style or her hint of gangster appeal, but I like her. She's described as being "glamorously bummed and vaguely sleazy", so she's clearly my idol. And boys, it doesn't hurt that she's hot. Not just indie music hot, but hot hot. Check out her two recent singles "Blue Jeans" and "Video Games" below. They'll be available for purchase October 11th. The guys of Wilco are Indie veterans and have been one of my favorite bands since high school. My taste in clothing/boys/and beer (non-alcoholic of course) wasn't great (still isn't), but hey! I guess my music taste wasn't so bad back in the day. Their newest album The Whole Love comes out on September 27th and I'm going to be first in line..or i'll probably just get it on iTunes whenever I wakeup that day. Tha Carter IV

I've liked most of the albums from the Carter series so I had big expectations. After my first few listens, and besides the songs we have all already heard (6 Foot 7 Foot and How To Love), I'd say my favorites off the album are:
-Nightmares of the Bottom
-She Will (feat. Drake)
-Abortion
-President Carter
-Its Good (feat. Jada and Drake)

"So Special” ft. John Legend and "Mirror" ft. Bruno Mars aren't bad either, mainly because of the beat and the hook. I was disappointed in "John", the song with Rick Ross (doesn't make him any less of a boss in my book). In the end, I liked it, I didn't LOVE it. Maybe I need to give it a few more listens, but for someone who is supposed to be "The Best Rapper Alive", I was a little disappointed. I think I'm pretty over the whole “he ain’t even go to class…. Beuller” kind punch line. Maybe he should go back to the purple drank? Listen to the album below and make your own opinions:

Everyone has been making the Watch The Throne/Cater IV comparisons lately. Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV" sold 940,000 copies sold in the first week. Its first week sales total was more than twice that of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s "Watch The Throne". DAMN. How did he do it? I think there were a few factors that contributed:

I honestly think it helps sales when albums are leaked before their release date. No one likes buying clothes before they try them on first, right? Or do you? Freak. I think it's the same concept. People heard the album, liked it, bought it.

YMCMB also didn't follow the typical release cycle. They didn't do the whole Tuesday to Tuesday thing. They dropped the album immediately after Lil Wayne’s performance at the Video Music Awards Sunday night. I guess his performance and leopard print ~~jeggings~~ pants got people excited about "Tha Carter IV".

Maybe Lil Wayne bought up a ton of albums with his own cash money to get back at Jay-Z and Kanye for the whole

“I'm like really half a billi nigga, really you got baby money. Keep it real with niggas, niggas ain't got my lady's money”

thing in their song "H.A.M."? Who knows.

In the end, I don't really think there's a comparison. There's not a single song on WTT that I skip when I listen to it. I definitely cannot say the same for The Cater IV. Lil Wanye may have come out on top when it comes to profits, but WTT is by far the better album in my book.

This is the latest release from Kaskade, "Eyes". This track is sure to become another hit that the American DJ can add to his list. The song only gets better with the addition of Mindy Gledhill's vocals. The whole track is soothing and euphoric. Steve Aoki and Afrojack have been performing this song in sets all summer, but they just released this version of "No Beef" to the public. It features the vocals of Miss Palmer. They realesed this video to accompany the song and it pretty much makes you want to fly to Vegas to party with the duo and chug bottles of "Afroki". Look out for cameos from Lil John, Flo Rida, Holly Madison and more in the video.

David Guetta

David Guetta has brought dance music to popular culture by working with mainstream artists and this song is no different. Chris Brown and Lil Wayne work with him on "I Can Only Imagine", one of the new tracks off his upcoming album. Chris Brown sounds good, but I think the song could have done without Lil Wayne. He doesn't do much for the track. It's not the most incredible song you'll hear this year, but I'd probably rub up against some people in the club to it. Enjoy!

Watch The Throne

If you haven't heard of Watch The Throne, you seriously must be living under a rock. The Kanye West/ Jay-Z collaboration album came out earlier this week and it is AMAZING. Collaboration albums are a something that don't happen often, let alone one between two artists of such fame. It features artists such as Frank Ocean, Beyonce, an OTIS REDDING sample and more. It puts a smile on my face everytime I hear Otis Redding's voice on my local rap/hip-hop radio staion.

It took a few listens before I could truely appreciate the whole thing. There is only one track that I sometimes skip while listening and that's HUGE for me considering I get major song ADD. So much for the Death of Autotune Hov! I forgive you. After hearing this album I feel like Kanye could part waters. He's basically a musical Moses(thats a good thing right?). There are plenty of Kanye's "HAHs" to go around on these tracks. Here are my favorites:

N*ggas in Paris:
It's one of my favorite tracks off of the whole album and I can't even tell people because of the title! Talk about a #whitegirlproblem. This song simply makes me wanna go HAM (catch that reference?). The beat is what brings you in and the kick is so hard hitting it makes you wanna punch something. It also contains one of my favorite lines off of the whole album, "Prince William ain’t do it right if you ask me cause if I was him I would have (slow voice) married(Mary)Kate and Ashley." It's a play on Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsons name and William maried Kate Middleton. HA!

Lift Off (Feat. Beyonce):
I don't LOVE when Kanye sings, but I LOVE when Beyonce does. This track sounds great being blasted from your car speakers, I would know.

Otis (Feat. Otis Redding):
Ok, so this song doesn't actually feature Otis, it's a sample, but I'm willing to let that slide because I'm obsessed with this song. This was the only song I heard before the WTT's actual release and it made me giddy like a kid on Christmas eve. Jay-Z and Kanye basically rap about how much money they've acquired and then Otis jumps in. Thumbs up.

Who Gon' Stop Me:
KANYE AND JAY-Z RAPPING OVER FLUX PAVILION. I guess dubstep really is taking over. This track is just fucking awesome.

Why I Love You (Feat. Mr. Hudson):
This is one of my favorite tracks because it's such a great song overall. I knew that I liked the song 3 seconds in. It has a great beat, a catchy hook, and Hov kills it.

Primetime:
Jay-Z's opening verse is nuts, but then Kanye comes in with the gamechanger, "Damn Yeezy, they all gotta be dimes? Well Adam gave up a rib so mine better be prime" BOOM.

Deer Tick is currently one of my favorite bands and I've just been looking for an opportunity to post them on here. Their most recent album came out in 2010, but if you haven't heard of them yet, better late than never. They have the same gritty, southern tone as The Black Keys, but with a little more of a folky sound. They are playing a free concert in NYC tomorrow (August 11th). So if you're in the area you should check them out. Based on the description on their website, I'd bet they're a good time:

"if you don't want to get covered in beer or confetti at one of our shows, I'd suggest not standing up in the front"

The Cool Kids just recently released their debut full length album "When Fish Ride Bicycles". With help from the Neptunes, Ghostface Killah, Bun B and Asher Roth, the cool kids new CD impressed me. I knew they could make fun music you would listen to at a party, but this CD is actually worth really listening to. The Greatest Form Of Flattery

The first time I listened to Biggie's "Mo Money Mo Problems" I wasn't thinking about the fact that it featured a song from another artist (Diana Ross), I was thinking "this song is fucking great!". OK I probably didn't say fucking because..I was a child, but you get the picture. Sampling isn't something new in Hip Hop, rappers like Biggie, Nas, Ice Cube and P. Diddy were doing it a long time ago (and they seemed to REALLY like The Isley Brothers), but artists today continue to use Motown classics and lots of less known songs. Rap songs now feature artists we would never think to associate with hip hop. Music genres are becoming more and more intertwined because of artist features and samples (Ludacris just rapped on a country song for goodness sakes!). As a music lover of all kinds, I wanted to share some of my favorite usage of samples in recent music. Enjoy!

J. Cole:

A few years back Jay-Z decided it wasn't enough to be married to Beyonce and have a swimming pool full of money (probably) and he started Roc Nation. J. Cole was the first artist to be singed, so we all expected big things from him. So far, so good. "The Return of Simba" was just one of the tracks in his series of Lion King inspired songs, which I still think is kind of odd but in the best way possible.

J. Cole produces his own beats and made a smart move when he chose to include "Runaway" from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs on this track. I was always a big fan of the group and I love J. Cole even more for using them on his song. I think it's a great song and Karen O's beautiful and somewhat creepy voice fits perfectly into his track.

Chris Brown:

Say what you want about Chris Brown's personal life, but the guy knows how to make a hit (pun intended). With electronic music growing in popularity, Chris made a wise decision when he decided to sample "I'm Not Alone" by Calvin Harris for his recent hit "Yeah 3X".

Dyme Def:

Dyme Def is a hip hop group from Seattle that I haven't heard much from, but I've liked what I've heard so far. In April they released "The Celestine Prophecy" a six-track EP that didn't disappoint. My favorite song by the group so far is called "Do Something".

This track samples Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks". I can't say I've ever really met a person who hates Zeppelin and if you do, it's safe to say that your father has terrible taste in music.

"When the Levee Breaks" is my favorite song by the band and apparently lots of other people's too because it's been used by tons of artists including Dr Dre and The Beastie Boys:

Drake:

Drake is one of the biggest rappers out right now because he has lost of talent and people love someone who likes bragging about being young, rich and surrounded by hot bitches. His recently gave his fans some songs to hold them over like "Marvin's Room" and "Dreams Money Can Buy".

The original song is Jai Paul's "BTSTU" and it's a great song if you haven't heard it already. It's hard not not like a song that starts out with a sweet little voice saying "Don't fuck with me, don't fuck with me."

PS: I just recently heard this song by SBTRKT called "Wildfire" because it was the free song on iTunes the other week, but I just saw that Drake added a verse to the song and it's cool. Check it out:

Childish Gambino:

I talked about Childish Gambino on here not too long ago and he's gained a lot of fame since then. Coincidence? Yes. He's won over fans with his creativity and probably because a lot of people like him on the NBC show Community.

He definitely got some brownie points from sorority girls around the world on his song "Do Ya Like" because it features a song from Adele. The song actually isn't from her most recent album, but from "19". It's called "Melt My Heart To Stone" and it is wonderful.

Chiddy Bang:

I couldn't do an entry about samples and not include Chiddy Bang. His most recent mixtape "Peanut Butter and Swelly" is, as always, heavy on the sampling. Xaphoon Jones and Chiddy consistently choose songs that surprise me, but in the best way ever. Just like lots of young rappers right now like Chris Webby and Hoodie Allen, they are using artists like The Supreme's, MGMT, Sufjan Stevens and Matt and Kim. It's clear they have great taste in music. Chiddy decided to jump on the Dubstep bandwagon with "I Can't Stop" and I don't blame them, it seems like everyone wants to rage these days.

The original song is "I Can't Stop" by Flux Pavillion and you've probably heard it up in da club, but you were also probably too drunk to remember.

"Dancing with the DJ" is one of 2 songs on Chiddy's mixtape that features The Knocks, but this is the one that got stuck in my head. The orginial song has the same name and is just as catchy and Chiddy Bang's version, if not more.

The last song I'm gonna mention from this tape is "Too Much Soul" because it's one of my favorite songs from Peanut Butter and Swelly.

The original is called "Too Fake" and it's by Hockey, a band you've probably never heard of, but all you're annoying indie music friends have known about for years.

Pretty Lights

Pretty Lights is one of those artists that you automatically want to see in concert after hearing. The music is more of an experience than anything else. Pretty Lights has performed at music festivals across the country this summer and the reviews are all good. He created a remix of John Denver's Country Roads for the All Good Festival last weekend by the request of fans and it's awesome. Ok, yea I'm a little biased (Go Mountaineers!), but this is the first time I've heard a remix of the song and didn't hate it. He was able to make the song new without ruining it. His latest release is called "Trust Issues" and it's another RnB track that uses a slowed down version of the chorus from DJ Khaled's song "I'm On One". His next album isn't supposed to be out until October, but the man is clearly having some girl issues that he needs to get off his chest via RnB slow jams. In case you've been avoiding every website on the internet, or didn't watch The Colbert Report last night, Bon Iver released their self titled album today. Yes, I said THEY. Justin Vernon is no longer just standing on stage solo with his guitar anymore, Bon Iver now has other members. This album is exactly what I expected, so I'm happy with it. If you liked his last CD, you're probably already going to buy this one so I don't need to convince you. If you're new to him, check out his performance of "Calgary" at StePhest Colbchella '011 below. Colbert's interview with Justin Vernon, where he learns that the singer's name is not in fact Bonathan Iver is also hilarious and worth watching.

Foster The People

Foster The People's first album Torches came out the last week of May, but I never got a chance to put it up here and it's worth talking about. You may have heard of their single "Pumped Up Kicks" which has recently blown up on iTunes. The lyrics to the song are actually kind of depressing and talk about a kid who's an outcast, but you'd never tell if you were just listening to the upbeat tone of the track. I downloaded their whole album on a whim and I have not been disappointed. **Possible party saving advice: Next time you're throwing a summer jam and the hipsters are starting to get restless because their flannels are itchy and you're running low on PBR, just throw this song on and I promise it will put everyone momentarily at ease.

Buddy Holly Tribute Album

On June 28th, one of rock 'n' rolls founding fathers (and apparently the world's first hipster..look at the glasses) will get a much deserved tribute album called Rave On Buddy Holly. That's right kids, Buddy Holly isn't just the name of a Weezer song! The rock icon died at age 22 in a plane crash with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens on February 3, 1959, aka The Day the Music Died. Artists like My Morning Jacket, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Cee Lo Green, Paul McCartney, She & Him, Kid Rock, Lou Reed, Graham Nash and more will be featured across 19 songs. This isn't just your regular cover album, participants were encouraged to interpret the songs using their own styles. I can't wait to hear what artists like Florence + The Machine have in store for us. Keep an eye out for the album next Tuesday and preview it below!

Swedish House Mafia

House music is gaining more and more popularity recently and a lot of that is because of these guys. The group is composed of Swedish DJs Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell. Their name spread to the pop music world when Pharrell contributed to their single "One." Their songs "Miami 2 Ibiza" and "Save the World" will make it impossible to sit still. There isn't much more to say, just listen and enjoy.

Promise not to lose me after I mention what OFWGKTA stands for? Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. I KNOW..I KNOW, hear me out though. OFWGKTA or Odd Future are group of hip hop artists from LA that are putting the Wu-Tang formula to use. They're led by rapper/producer Tyler, the Creator and includes rappers Hodgy Beats, Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis and Mike G, singer Frank Ocean and a ton of other producers. Tyler, the Creator just released his album "Goblin" in May and it's wiiiild. I've recently heard a lot from Tyler, the Creator and Frank Ocean. Their video for "She" just came out a few days ago and it's definitely worth watching (but not alone, at night or in the dark)

Those of you not yet familiar with actor/comedian Donald Glover's rapping alter ego, meet Childish Gambino. He's a little Lil Wayne with some Das Racist and some indie rock thrown in there. His wordplay and similes are what makes his songs so great. With lyrics like "My attitudes a prostitute who broke cause she don't give a fuck" and "My swag Jehovah Witness dude, it never take a holiday", how can you not like Glover? Lovestoned was a mixtape released back in September, but I still play it so I figured I'd throw it on here. If you like the Shwayze mixtape I put up here a little while ago you'd probably like Aaron Smith's Lovestoned because they're the same person. Yup, Aaron Smith is Shwayze's real name. Overall it's more pop than rap and not as beachy as usual, but it grew on me a lot. My favorite songs are probably “Pretty Girl”, “Love Letter” and “Hippy”, but the whole tape is good. Lykke Li is a singer who is extremely popular in her native Sweden and is gaining popularity here. Wounded Rhymes dropped on March 1st and it's worth the purchase. She has a very different vibe on this album and I'm into it.

She's definitely trying to shock some people with lines like, "I'm your prostitute and you gon' get some". Hey, do what you gotta do girl. She may say she’s our prostitute, but she’s the one completely in control and the one leaving us in anticipation for whatever she comes up with next. This is one of those songs that I heard while riding in my dad's car that stuck with me. G. Love brings a refreshing, fun twist to the song. He has his own style and it definitely shines through in this cover. The track appears on the upcoming album "Fixin’ to Die", on which the Avett Brothers are both producers and backing band.

Corinne Bailey Rae covers Bob Marley-Is This Love:

OK, is it just me or are ALL of these guys good looking? You've probably heard of this group because of their hits like "Bass Down Low" and "Top of The World". They make good party music and are similar to groups like Far East Movement and LMFAO. I think they're what would happen if Chester French and Mike Posner had a baby. 1/2 of the Cool Kids, Sir Michael Rocks just released "The Rocks Report" and it's phenomenal. No offense to The Cool Kids, but I'm LOVING his solo material. He definitely earned some brownie points by teaming up with members of Pac Div on this one.

This mixtape had almost too much swag for me. I am white and currently living in West Virginia so that isn't very hard, but ya knowwww. The beats are great and it's solid from start to finish.

Just like every other girl I know, I'm OBSESSED with the new Adele album. I feel like she is writing about my life and I think I love her. She's a cool ass person and I can't believe she wrote this whole album at my age..oh wait a year younger than I currently am. Just another artist making me feel like a failure.

She wrote the album about a guy who brokeup with her and when asked how he felt about it she said, “Well, I think he’s a bit bitter, because the album is doing a lot better than anyone expected and I think he’s still hanging out in London in a bit of a kind of shabby apartment..and I’m staying in a very nice hotel around the corner!” That guy may have won the battle, but I think it's clear Adele won the war.

Mac Miller's long awaited mixtape dropped last week and if you haven't listened to it yet, you're missing out. I had a feeling I was going to like the "fralbum" (free album) as he refers to it, after he leaked songs like Donald Trump prior to the mixtape release.

As soon as the first track, Best Day Ever started, I loved what I heard. It was so mellow and the lyrics flowed perfectly. My favorite tracks off the tape were Donald Trump and All Around The World. My expectations were exceeded. I still can't believe this kid is 19..makes me feel like I should get my shit together..ugh. I HIGHLY recommend this download. Radiohead released their new album, "The King of Limbs," and a video for lead single "Lotus Flower." a day earlier that expected last week. I've been listening to the album nonstop since Friday. Ed O'Brien shared the news of the release by saying, "It's Friday. It's almost the weekend, it's a full moon. You can download 'The King of Limbs' now if you so wish! Thank you good people for waiting. Have a great weekend wherever you are." I heart you Ed, so so much.

The album is a little more electronic than their past CDs, but the more you listen to it, the more it grows on you, just like every other Radiohead album. Here's the video for "Lotus Flower" where Thom Yorke's breaks it the fuck down. I'm not sure if thats the sprinkler I spy or if it's just some sort of strange twitch, but whatever it is, I like it.

Grammy Awards

I was pretty disappointed with the awards themselves (I'm talking about you Lady Antebellum) but, musical performances from acts like Bob Dylan, Eminem, and Cee Lo made the show worth watching. Here were some of my favorites:

Mumford and Sons, the Avett Brothers, and Bob Dylan:
Two of my favorite up and coming groups performing with a legendary singer? Of course this performance was going to be a hit. Sure, Dylan sounded how I look in the morning, a little rough, but, it was a great performance nonetheless. Also, Mumford and Sons should have won best new artist, JUST SAYIN.

Cee Lo, Gwyneth Paltrow, and the Muppets:
Who would have thought that the most bizarre performance of the night wouldn't come from Lady Gaga? Gwyneth Paltrow and Cee Lo's performance was just plain awesome. It was by far, my favorite performance of the night. From Cee Lo's peacock costume to the Muppet backup singers, the whole thing just made me smile.

Rihanna, Eminem, Skylar Grey, Adam Levine, and Dr Dre:
Rihanna and Eminem performed their hit, "Love the Way You Lie," and then led into "I Need a Doctor," which Grey and Dre contributed to as well. You may recognize Skylar Grey from Lupe's new song "Words I Never Said" and Diddy Dirty Money's "Coming Home". Rihanna looked great and Adam Levine is just so nice to look at. It was a great performance, but I just wish Eminem's eyes didn't always look like they were about to pop out of his head.

Katy Perry and Bruno Mars also really impressed me and I have to give some credit to ~~Johnny Depp~~ John Mayer, Norah Jones and Keith Urban for their performance of Dolly Parton's song "Jolene." And a BIG congrats to the Black Keys who won Best Alternative Album for "Brothers" and Arcade Fire who got Album of the year "The Suburbs". I only hope Best New Artist: Esperanza Spalding had Bruno Mars at her side to catch the grenades being thrown at her from Bieber's crazy, devastated tween fans.

Cee-Lo/Band of Horses Covers

I'm a big fan of cover songs if they're done well. Band of Horses is one of my top three favorite bands and who doesn't love Cee-Lo after "Fuck You". This cover of Band of Horses "No One's Gonna Love You" was actually recorded by Cee-Lo right before "Fuck You" was released and it is AWESOME.
